Lake Moraine, near Lake Louise

We got off gthe beaten path (and crowds) of Lake Louise and found an equally idyllic spot about 15 km away. I tried to go for a trail run here, but the bear problems were so severe that they literally had a park ranger stationed at the trailhead turning away anyone in groups of less than 6. So, I ran up and down the "watermelon snow cone blue" colored lake instead. Not so bad.

Hiking up to the top of the rockpile led to spectacular views. The kids have been good sports about all the photos, but sometimes if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Hiking has been very mood-dependent. Some days the kids are mountain goats, some days they're jello. I guess adults are no different. We've been to so many gorgeous mountain areas that I'm sure they blur in the minds of 8 year olds. I wonder how much they'll mention the mountains when we're stuck in LA traffic or Las Vegas sprawl...

Anyway, we've been on some 2 hour hikes (at altitude) and we've found that if we get the kids to lead, it works well. Plus, that way the bears get them first... nach.
