Driving to Chicago...
After 6 hours of driving we were 50 miles east of Denver. Rooster's was just about teh only choice at this exit, a town of 500. It was Tuesday. Guess what I got?
p.s. I did ask about how many people brought their horses into the restaurant. The answer was a qualified zero -- the waitress said that the sign helped keep any problems away.
I drove and the rest of the crew gambled in the back. Miuchela even put on her sunglasses so that people couldn't read her eyes.
Eli drew a full house, aces and kings, and cleaned up.
A stop in Des Moines led us to the Prosciutto king of North America, none other than Herb Eckhouse, a very distant cousin (we share great-grandfathers). The product (La Quercia Prosciutto) is fantastic! Get it at any Whole Foods or online: http://www.laquercia.us/
Herb and son Aaron hard at work in the plant.

Out behind Pops' shack, where Ian lives, is a fence that grabs at anyone headed on to a city somewhere.
Ian's fence, Chris' town bike. Memorable shot. Click on the picture to see it in a larger size.

Morning ride with Chris
Our last morning in CB. Chris and I did the lower loop, the upper lower loop and the GB trail before reversing direction and coming back on all 3. A super 90 minute wakeup ride.
You can't beat mountain biking in Crested Butte. While it didn't hurt to be on Ian's borrowed $3k FS ride, these were some of the best rides I've done in the last 10 years.

One last bash in CB before we left...
Andy and his colleague Phil were doing fieldwork in CB when I called him. Small world!
The kids slept under the stars to watch the Persied meteor showers

Downtown CB with Michela
Elk Avenue
The newly reopened Forest Cafe. I think we were just about the first customers. Michela and I saddled up for a drink. (She had a shirley temple)
Ivy, the owner and bartender, was so excited to have customers, she started giving me free shots and then suggested Michela pour one from behind the bar.
I call this "job training", so don't call the DSS.
Phat Ride adventuring: Emerald Lake, CB
We stuffed 7 of us into the van for a liesurely 15 mike dirt road trek into Emerald Lake, outside Crested Butte. Only took an hour to get there, and we ground out on the frame just a few times.
Sally heads down to the lake with Cat and the kids...
Michela contemplates a swim in the 50 degree water (we all did swim, it wasn't too bad)
One of the muddy, cliffside turns we made in the van. No rollovers yet!
